Listening to classical music on headphones, I increasingly caught myself thinking that I did not understand its meaning. I liked the melodies, but they seemed torn from the context. Then I decided to study the history of classical music. I wanted to know who stood at the origins, how harmony developed, why Bach is considered a genius. I started with the simple — I looked for articles and blogs until I found one material that caught my attention. He told the story not dryly, but figuratively, with examples and audio fragments. I understood how musical ideas passed through the centuries, how wars, religion and philosophy influenced composers. Now, listening to a piece, I can imagine in what conditions it was written, what ideas are embedded in it. This is a completely different level of perception. Studying history, I found not just music, but a way to understand the world more deeply.
